Hi! We’re Erika and Shawn, Western Canada wedding photographers with a dream of living in a retired school bus – also known as a Skoolie.
Yep, you read that right. 😉 (and no, we’re not crazy!)

We’ve both been face deep in this whole skoolie thing for literally almost as long as we’ve been together. It’s just our new normal. Seeing the bewilderment in our friends eyes when we initially started telling them of our grand plan was pretty entertaining, I will admit!
We met online on OK Cupid with, get this… a 99% match. Neither one of us was ready for the other but we gave it a shot, and well, here we are. I won’t argue for a second about the accuracy of that percentage we got for our compatibility. It didn’t take us long to figure out how similar we are as people and for our future plans.
Initially we started tossing around the idea of buying an RV and traveling full time. We did tons of research, and eventually settled on the idea of converting an old school bus into a tiny home on wheels. So we bought a retired school bus and started sketching floor plans.
The next logical question was – how are we going to support ourselves on the road?
Western Canada Wedding Photographers
Before Shawn and I met, I’d already been shooting weddings for several years. I graduated from SIAST with an Applied Photography Diploma in 2011. With big dreams, I set out to follow my dream of becoming self-employed as a photographer. Years later, I’m getting so close to taking that leap into being self-employed full-time. Let me tell you, that thought is TERRIFYING! Yet it’s exhilarating. So, It was a no-brainer for Shawn to join my team as Second Shooter and Assistant and for us to expand our services to Western Canada.
So, here we are. We bought our bus in May of 2017 and have been slowly picking away at the conversion. So far we’ve gutted the interior, raised the roof a foot, insulated the floor, and are about half done the spray foam insulation. We have plans for solar panels, a composting toilet, and a wood burning stove for the colder months.
Once complete (fingers crossed for 2020 – we want to leave on our honeymoon!) we’ll be doing the Western Canada wedding photographers thing with our three cats in tow. Where will we go? Wherever our couples-in-love take us. We can’t wait! Follow our journey on Instagram at @lifewithbus!
